I wish there was a Linux version of the software and drivers (I'm not that good with gimp). This issue is not only restricted to the Epson software - even Microsoft products have this issue. After a few moments the system clears itself and processing continues. I blame Windows more than Epson for the fact that the software temporarily 'hangs' on a regular basis. ots of additional research is needed to clarify what the controls do.

The manual is not very useful for the amateur l. The V800 (a scanner in the Epson family you do not appear to be considering) is viewed as the 'entry level' for higher end scanning and the people that are doing high end work are opting for the V850. I use ICE when necessary it isn't totally perfect but it does an overall good job (one of the better cleanups is attached). The V600 is generally considered a decent low end scanner for general scanning work.
Overall I am quite pleased with the results. I've been using the manual (professional) mode and adjusting color balance and cleaning up. The quality of the slides have ranged from excellent to downright color-shifted.
